On Speedbump Road

Excerpt from my daily journey with bipolar

Depression is a lot like “Alice in Wonderland.” She begins happily chasing a rabbit and before you can say manic, she falls and falls and falls into a dark chamber. Unlike Alice, though, depression is a life-long journey into a dark, no light lit chamber. It’s a road of bumps.

Sometimes you get relieved by becoming overly happy, manic. You over-extend yourself and then another speed bump comes. You drive over it and slowly descend into the depression chamber again.

But the road of bumps has an ending and two lanes again. The construction is over, and with help from your psychologist, psychiatrist, the support of family and friends, and taking your medications daily, the highs are lower, and the lows are higher. The speed bumps are easier to manage and one day there is a light at the end of the tunnel.
